Landscaping Tips for Hot Summer Weather

Living in the Orlando and Central Florida weather, we’re lucky to experience warm weather most of the year. Unfortunately, this means that your landscape is often exposed to harsh conditions. If you want your landscape to make it through the season, there are steps you can take to prevent your outdoor space from looking scorched.

Everyone loves to have a lush looking garden all year round. To accomplish this, it’s important to have a plan in place. Servello and Son is a professional landscaping business in Orlando that’s here to provide you with the resources you need. Read on for some landscaping tips you can use in the hot summer weather.

Using Water to Protect Your Orlando Landscape

If the sun is taking a toll on your landscape, it’s easy to spot the signs. First, leaves will begin to look dry and wilted. This is a sign they’re not getting the water they need. The more they dry, the browner they will turn, and eventually, die. Instead, providing them with plenty of water early in the day is the best way to hold off the effects of the sun.

Plan to water them at least once a day, especially when the outside temperatures rise. Make sure the water reaches the roots of the plants deep underground.

For potted plants, it may be a smart idea to move them into a shady location for part of the day when you’re at home. This can also prevent some of the damage described above. If you can’t move the plants, consider making an “artificial” shade through draped fabric instead.

Bonus tip: In addition to water, you can also use mulch as a type of “insulation”. This prevents the sun from overheating the plants. Simply add a few inches throughout your landscape to make a big difference.

Other Tips to Protect Your Landscape

Here are a few other short tips to protect your landscape this summer:

  • Try not to walk all over your grass too much. When you press down on the lawn, the grass gets beaten down and damaged. More than that, heavy foot traffic keeps your lawn from getting the air and water it needs to grow.
  • Let your grass grow just a bit taller. In the summer, you can raise your mower blade up to about three inches for the health of your landscape. This is because taller grass has longer roots, which gives them a better chance at surviving hot weather.

If you feel this work is too much for you and your family, contact the experts at Servello and Son in Orlando for your residential landscaping needs.
